An El Paso, Texas, Construction Worker is Killed Following a Traffic CollisionFriday, September 7th, 2012
In El Paso, Texas, last week, a 33-year-old construction worker was killed while helping to repave a ramp on I10 near Artcraft Road. An automobile collision in the construction zone caused the tragedy.
According to police, at about 11:50 p.m. that night, a 19-year-old man entered the construction zone driving a 2002 blue Ford Windstar van. The traffic had been reduced to one lane. The van was going too fast and hit the rear end of a 2009 Ford Focus. Then the van driver lost control of the van and swerved to his right; he entered a portion of the road that had been closed off from traffic. The van then struck the construction worker and pinned him against a milling machine which was still in operation. The construction worker died after being transported to University Medical Center.
Neither the driver of the Ford, a 25-year-old woman, nor anyone else was injured in the accident.
Police do not believe that alcohol was involved in the accident. The investigation would continue, according to officials.
Highway construction zones are frequently the sites of fatal accidents. Approximately 1,000 people in the United States die annually on stretches of highway where construction is going on. The Federal Highway Administration has expressed the hope that drivers will keep in mind that the highway is the workplace for thousands of people and drive responsibly.
